• Phase 3 Planes - Final Presentation

    For the final presentation, we had to develop a group strategy to build one stable element showing all four of our projets. We stabilized each of our protostructure the same way by using diagonales and by making a cross as a base.

    We also decided to create a link between every project. For example, my project is in the corner that shows a transition from a room to another.

    We can also see that transition with the stairs that I share with Kathleen and with the floor that is linked with Alexandre's floor.

                                                                          The Individual Element 

    For the individual part of the phase 3, I decided to integrate the way the space is used in the painting below (We were given many pictures as reference and I chose that one like in the phase 3 exercice 1).

    After working on the perspective of the picture, I wanted to explore this spacious transition between the private and the public. Finally, I created an element who was a transition from a project to another and an element that could give intimacy easily while staying open and spacious.

    Expand your project by joining your protostructure with other(s). There are different ways to connect the elements of your protostructure with others, make it in a way that the overall structure becomes strong and coherent. Now the two, three or four protostructures are your potential territory. Use it to intensify your ideas and complement your project by allowing your neighbor to use your protostructure.

    By expanding your structure it might be needed to modify your project or to create connecting elements.

    Based on this painting, the goal of this exercise was to make the perspective according to the space already suggested. Then I had to think about a new space that wouldn't appear but suggested by the opening of the side on the left of the room.

    Exercise 2 - The tectonic and the stereotomic

    “Tectonics is defined as "the science or art of construction, both in relation to use and artistic design." It refers not just to the "activity of making the materially requisite construction that answers certain needs, but rather to the activity that raises this construction to an art form." It is transcending the banality of mere building by the modeling of a physical thing which reveals a conscious attempt by the architect to "tell a story": bringing the physical into the meta-physical world. Tectonic expression concerns itself with the narrative capacity of a building, primarily with respect to itself, but also as part of a more general circumstance (physical, social, political, economic etc.).”

    “The wall to a room therefore is different from a piece of masonry; flat and thin, the wall possesses neither substance nor relief and thus creates no sense of depth. Contrary to this, masonry reacts on both of its sides and establishes both internal and external boundaries, here and there. As an independent architectural element it has the inherent capability to enclose and define – and thus create – space. A wall, however, is inevitably joined to a floor and a ceiling, or an underlying supporting construc- tion, and in essence relies on the spatial transitions for its existence. In terms of these characteristics a wall belongs to the category of filigree construction (in traditional frame construction apparent as the infilling), whereas masonry is considered to be an element of solid construction.     Select two planes -one horizontal, and one vertical- of your casted space that you think are relevant to define a spatial condition of this space. The two planes selected should be touching each other. Consider them as the starting point for your project. Find a position for them in the protostructure that activates new relations or potentiate existing ones. Develop the tectonic relation among the two planes and also with the protostructure. Use a stereotomic approach for one plane and a tectonic approach for the other. Explore the articulation and transition between one plane and the other. It is suggested to explore the use of your “element” or any element found in ALICE for defining a constructive ADN for the tectonic plane.

    The initial planes could (should) be modified when translated into a built reality. They could be scaled on any dimension and split if justified. It can have openings.

    Explore not only the material transition between the planes, but also between the spaces created by the planes

    Be aware that the protostructure is very unstable, use your project as a mean for stabilization. You can also add extra elements for stabilization purposes if needed. Carefully distribute the weight of the plaster so it helps to stability.

    Exercise 2 - Project


    Based on the micro-urbanism strategy selected by the studio, each group should develop one of the projects on the location and following the guidelines of the common strategy.

    As we have mentioned before, it is necessary that the project decisions (placement, program and design) are funded on observations. This observations can come, initially, from the place and its uses, but also from the relations with the body measures, the acts of the program proposed and the relation with the other programs. I would like to insist on this, cause having a good observation and identifying the potential of a given situation, will help you to take decisions on your project an will also help you to judge if the project is fulfilling the goals proposed or not. Use the information you have collected about the movement of people, the acts of the people and the visual relations to support your statements.

    Each group should split the tasks between the students so each one get deeper attention in a part of the problem. The roles should be assigned as follows:

    • The urbanist: Is going to be on charge of identifying the large scale impact and relations of the project. Will coordinate the relations with the other projects in order to potentiate the micro-urbanism strategy and will provide all the necessary graphic and analytical information to support the decisions in the large scale. Should also make a careful and precise measurement of the site of the project in order to place it later.

    • The engineer: Will be focused on developing the nodes and connections between the parts, will propose how to assemble it in parts and should care for the stability and correct dimensioning of the wooden elements. The engineer will provide all the technical drawings explaining the assembly and the detailing of the relevant nodes as well as the mockups of the nodes scale 1:1.

    • The design team: Is going to be on charge of defining the overall form of the project, integrating what the urbanist and the engineer are proposing for the macro and micro scale. The design team should be aware of the architectural language of the construction as well as the correct measuring of the elements in relation to the body. The design team will produce the general drawings and collages of the project as well as de 1:10 models.

    The idea behind specializing the work of each student, is enriching the group discussions with contributions from different areas and also ensuring that none of this topics are neglected. Each student should become somehow expert on one area by having a deeper knowledge on his/her role. In any case, the final quality of the project will depend on the interaction and contribution of each student in all topics.


    • Urbanist: Poster 80x60 (portrait) with: 1) Situation plan 1:500 showing all the projects on site. 2) the urban analysis on both scales: the one of the whole area of intervention and the specific one of the site of the project. Use what you are learning on your urban analysis course. It should include circulation schemes, views schemes, ways of use of the place, etc. 3) Schemes to explain the relation between the micro-urbanism strategy and the project. 4) Set of sketches with the observations that support the project. Design the layout of the poster, it has to be a quality graphic piece, use the references. 5) Plaster model of the site of the project scale 1:10, minimum thickness for the base: 1 cm.
    • Engineer: 1) 3 critical nodes of the construction, built 1:1. 2) Poster 80x60 containing an axonometric drawing of the assembly sequence, scale 1:10 and 3 details scale 1:2 or 1:5. Show the position of the details in the overall. Declare the different scales.
    • Design: 1) Photo collage poster of the project in place (use the Hockney reference for the background). 2) Monge projection of the project scale 1:5, with human figures using the project on each use. 3) Model of the project 1:10 to mount on the base provided by the urbanist.


    - Friday November 4th, review: working model with context 1:20, working model of a critical node 1:1, draft of the monje projection on site 1:32 (with context).

    - Monday November 7th, 9:00 hrs, presentation.
