    We used straps to connect the timbers between them. The straps are useful for the transport (we just have to roll up and put them in the container) and for Zürich to put them on the structure.

    Three type of nodes for the structure of the main slope


                                                   1st node

    This node is the one asking for the lowest quantity of

    wood (contrary of the two others) but the ramp is

    supported on the edge line (of the prominent wood) and not

    on the flat part of the bar sections. There's, there for, a gap

    between the two wooden timbers.

    Because of the gap's problem, we added a second

    vertical placed in a staggered pattern to better support the bar

    used for the slope.

    The final presentation of our project engaging with the thematic of reapropriation of built structures in an urban environment took place with a performative aspect.

    The discussion was punctuated by the intervention of various persons directly modifying the model by applying paint, tearing apart some of the film surfaces and creating new ones, finally changing completely the spatial conditions by using the structure we offered.

                                        Resolving compression and flexion: by combining wood sections (2,7cm x 10cm) perpendicularly


    The structural system is given by wooden columns and beams, combined in I sections, that are being clipped onto the given protostructure.

    This system engages directly with the protostructure and creates new proportions for making the wrapping of film possible.

    As mentioned in the post of week 1, the choice of using film comes directly from the practice of street artists. It allows us to create space where the user can have an immediate influence on our perception of space and where rezappropriation of urban public space is made possible and legal, although it can still be disruptive.

    The film is used by graffiti artists to practice their painting. Parisian street artists Kanos and Astro launched the concept in 2009, it has since then become common. (for further information and examples: www.cellograff.com)

    The material we chose to confront not only has physical characteristics we are unfamiliar with (elasticity, transparence, stickiness, resistance) but also poses structural questions.

    As we noticed with the first draft model, spanning the film around a structure puts its elements under strong stress: the structure is compressed, the woodsticks bow, joints break. We faced these questions by exploring the possibilities of reinforcement. This could be either done by creating frames, by reinforcing the given protostructure directly, or by adding elements that reinforce themselves and only just lean on the protostructure.

  • ROOMS - week 1 - the vandal

    Following our observations on the site concerning tags, graffiti, and vandalism, we pushed the observation. In Lausanne and its suburbs, we spotted places where the urban reappropriation has taken place under the form of vandalism.

    The images above represent an extract of the locations we noticed. We concluded that the conditions characterising places that have been vandalised do offer a certain pattern. Mostly, we noticed a dichotomy: the vandal either uses a surface with high visibility (along train rails, highways, subway stations) or that guarantee invisibility and anonymity during the execution (hidden places, tunnels).

    Apparently, some are interested in marking surfaces that are difficult to attain. The rush of doing something illegal in a highly exposed and dangerous place matters. At the same time, others prefer quiet and hidden places where the risk of being discovered is low. 

    On the other hand, regularly checking the content uploaded on open social media Instagram demonstrates the creative interest of connected people located near the site, due to the presence of ZHDK.

    As a common studio guideline, we were give the reference of John Hejduk's "Masques of Architecture".

    We imagined a masque, a character, to start imagining a space that would at the same time embody the character and make it the masque for the character. We named it: the Vandal, based on our previous observations.

    First draft model: the Vandal.


    In our first model, we developed the notions of observing, hiding, and being observed. Also, we integrated the observations we made around Lausanne: we combine a tunnel, optimal for hiding, as well as very exposed surfaces. Notably, a platform accessible by a small ladder is thought to offer spectators a place for a form of "voyeurism", observing the vandal.


    The choice of the material, cellophane, come from graffiti practice. Since the 1990's, graffiti and street artists use the film wrapped around two trees to create surfaces they can practice on. We see it as something we can express reappriation with: wrapping, unwrapping, the film is easy to use and allows the reconnection of space with every layer.

    Therefore, we understand reappropriation of space not only by vandalism, but as an action taken by users that directly modifies our perception of space. By either applying paint, ink, or posters onto the film surface, one modifies its transparence and texture. On the other hand, it can also easily be damaged - and restored, in the same configuration, or a new one.
