The floor of the Pantheon, Rome, was designed and built with a slight curve, as though perched on top of a massive sphere (which one could say is, technically, the case). This technique can be traced back to ancient Greece, the primary aesthetic inspiration for Roman architects and engineers, and was used as an optical illusion to rectify the way the human eye saw large, supposedly straight, architectural elements, especially columns, as seen in Athena's Parthenon in Athens.
The Alice team and first year students recreated the floor of the roman temple using an exaggerated scale by constructing wooden then plaster models for every second piece of the divided space, thus creating a chessboard likeness of the remarkable Roman monument.
