"Varar, spanish verb for the action of drifting, defines the essence of this mobile architecture. The project joins the three territories of Chiloé, fluctuating within its water tides. The three existing types of architecture are combined as a new triptych. This fortuitous composition of elements, assimilated to a cadavre esquis, becomes a subtle equilibrium to host cultural and social events for the community. This protected niche on water similar to the existing primary and ephemeral constructions acts as a new subtle exchange of existing knowledge and traditions present on the island. A set of foundations anchored in their own movement."

Varar, spanish verb for the action of drifting, defines the essence of this mobile architecture. Overture 2.0 "building on the edge of infinity":

This research is an investigation of the conditions of an isolated territory. A study carried out on the archipelago of Chiloé, part of the long Chilean coastline, ultimately describing an entire country. Chile with its extreme geographical borders is an isolated territory. To the rest of the world, an island in itself.

The territory of the sea, as the protagonist, shapes the very borders of this island. As explored in this research, in all architectural aspects, the relation to the sea is the base of most of its existence and symbiosis.

The construction of these different thoughts will now be the starting point for an architectural project, taking into account these simple conditions:

    “no vivimos en los bordes”

we don’t live on the borders

    “vivimos al borde”

    we live at the border

“vivir en los contornos de una figura| frente a su mar de dentro| es nuestro modo” 47

to live on the outlines of a figure | in front of its sea from the inside | in our own way

These conditions bring two important contrasting identities into the architecture of Chiloé. On one hand the houses and churches built on the territory and the seaside are light and ephemeral dispersed in small unities over the territory. On the other hand the boat structures are very firm and tough to handle the extreme conditions of the sea. These two opposing necessities create a solid ground for the design of a project.

The project will be as an Ode, like Pablo Neruda who wrote for himself elemental Odes to the world, the bees, the bicycle, the salt, the lemon, the market. It is a wish to place the existing conditions of Chiloé, as notions of poetry and symbolism for a future architectural composition.

The project also wants to be similiar to the work started by Vicente Zegers and Natalia Assler, young boat constructors in Chiloé, originally from Santiago. They where looking into nourishing the ancestral knowledge of shoreline carpenters in Chiloé, giving it a new value, instead of trying to make something contemporary and different.

Architecture becoming a motor, moving in and around its natural environment, relating and connecting itself to it, instead of staying separate from its vastness.

Ultimately, the boat, symbol of movement, embodies the historical essence of the architecture of Chiloé, not used as Fritzcarraldo’s infiltration into the territory of the Amazonia with the nave, but as a closing cycle bringing architecture from its territorial ground back into the sea.

By hybridizing three characteristic architectures and using their own construction techniques, there is a possibility for a new poetic. Pointing out and expressing as well, a thought on punctual architecture, instead of territorial invasions and occupations of land to feed economic appetites.

To extend the project, another trip, or act of travelling will be the starting point for the creation of a new archive of continuous existing reflections...
